Subject: proposed amendments to the Marriage Act 1961

Dear Mr. Abbott, I'd like to voice my opinion on marriage equality. You should support it fully, right away. It is inevitable and as such you still have the opportunity to avoid being the last person standing in the way of change. It will be a small step for you in terms of general bigotry and what that means for you as an individual but it will be a start. At least pretend that you could cope in a leadership position.

Dear Joshua

Thank you for your email relating to proposed amendments to the Marriage Act 1961.

The Coalition believes that marriage is a union between a man and a woman. The Coalition does not support any change to Commonwealth law that could diminish the institution of marriage.

This is the policy that we took to the 2007 and 2010 elections.

There has been some discussion that the Coalition should change its mind and allow a conscience vote on the issue of marriage.

Unlike the Gillard Government, the Coalition stands by our election promises and our commitment to marriage remains a matter of policy.

However, it is always open to individual members of the Coalition to vote against the agreed party position if they feel strongly about an issue. This is a fundamental tenet of the Liberal and National parties and is in stark contrast to the Labor Party which expels any person who does not toe the party line.

The Coalition remains committed to the principle of respect for all Australians. In 2008, the Coalition supported changes to superannuation, tax and social security laws to provide equity for same-sex relationships.

In 2013, there will a Federal election. All elections are important but we believe this election will be one of the most important in generations. There will be a clear choice between the Coalition and the Labor Party – a clear choice between the Coalition’s positive plans for Australia and Labor’s continued incompetence and untrustworthiness, a clear choice between the Coalition’s plans to help families and small business cope with the rising cost of living and Labor’s new and increased taxes.

If you would like to read more about the Coalition’s vision for Australia, you may be interested in my recently released book ‘A Strong Australia’. This book brings together the major speeches I delivered in 2012 and the over 50 major policies and initiatives that have been announced since the last election. ‘A Strong Australia’ sets out the Coalition’s plans to build a strong and prosperous economy and a safe and secure Australia. The e-book is available free of charge in formats suitable for iPad, iPhone, Kindle or Kobo e-reader, or as a PDF. To access the book, please visit www.liberal.org.au/strong-australia.

Yours sincerely

Dear Mr. Abbott,

Thank you for taking the time to copy and paste this response to me. Thank you for being clear about your commitment towards refusing any change of opinion now and forever. This is a very impressive quality in a leader for me, for some reason. I'd like to think that once you've driven the country into a more conservative nanny state I'll sit back and think "well, at least he was consistent in his failures, you couldn't argue that he didn't stick to this original plan of fail". And that will be a satisfactory moment for me, for some reason.

Regards

PS: I enjoyed that you signed off with your name in caps. I imagine you screaming it loudly and suddenly.

PPS: I think it's really generous of you to make your e-book free of charge - I'm looking forward to snuggling up in bed then reading about a prosperous, safer and more secure Australia conveniently on my iPad, iPhone, Kindle or Kobo e-reader - you are so relevant that I think we should exchange details on snapchat from this point on.
